“My
most recent work has focused on an investigation of representations of
art-historical figures in film. Dramatizations of artists’ lives such
as in the films; Basquiat, Vincent and Theo, and Surviving Picasso have
provided source material for paintings, prints, and drawings. I’m
interested in simplifying the photographic information to arrive at an
image where the artist portrayed, and the actor portraying, are equally
present as well as obscured. This simplification/abstraction also
serves to homogenize the images creating a sense of simultaneity from
painting to painting.
“My
interest lies in the questions of time, identity, and authenticity
posed by the paintings: Does the image exist in the time of the
painter, the film, or the artist examined? Who is identified (Bowie,
Warhol, or Bowie as Warhol)? And, how does one determine the veracity
of the depiction?”
